MY ROLE

Research, wireframing, interface design, create and manage implementation of design system, introduce the UX designer role and best practices company wide.

SUMMARY

Once I familiarized myself with the current state of the platform, I sat down with the Product Management team for more questions. I began to gather as much data as I could get my hands on which came in the form of years of user requests and logs of customer feedback. We discussed requirements and expectations for the next generation partner portal as it became known and agreed upon the top 3 priorities:

  1. New Modernized Interface
  2. Improved Product Ordering Experience for Our Partners
  3. Mobile-First Mentality

After a series of prototypes I landed on a side navigational structure that would allow the user to quickly drill down into their most common areas of use according to our page analytics and data from the support team.

When implementation first began I learned my first lesson of designing for scale. With over 40 developers and only 1 of me, we needed to build a design system and fast.

With a new component library in place, I pivoted focus back to the new ordering experience. Data provided to me by the PM team allowed me to better understand the user’s current journey and how we could easily cut down on their time to order.

I prefer to be involved with the development teams throughout implementation as a resource to ensure consistency in the design details. Prior to that though, I provide each team with a high fidelity mockup and full access to our component libraries.

RESULTS

By adding the UX role into the company I was able to decrease development rework, increase productivity by giving clear expectations of feature functionality, and decrease handoff time from Product Management to Development. The ordering experience is still in progress but even in it’s current state has cut ordering time in half and enabled the possibility to order multiple products at a time.
